Fixed-income calculation questions

Answers about accrued interest, zero coupons, yield quotations, scenario error and what the ladder output does not measure.

The calculator is a regular coupon-date reference. It is suitable for inspecting its stated mathematics, not for automatically pricing every bond that shares a coupon and maturity.

Why does my broker price differ?

A broker quote may use a specific settlement date, accrued interest, a day-count convention, a different yield quotation and actual bid or offer terms. The worksheet omits those details. Reconcile the cash-flow dates and price convention before assuming the difference is a numerical error.

Can the coupon be zero or the yield be negative?

Yes. A zero-coupon input retains the terminal principal payment. Negative nominal yields are supported down to -5%, subject to the shifted-yield limit. These inputs are mathematical cases, not predictions that a particular bond will trade at those yields.

Does coupon frequency change the yield convention?

Yes. The annual yield entered here is nominal and is compounded at the selected annual, semiannual or quarterly frequency. Keeping the same numerical annual yield while changing frequency changes the discounting convention. Compare equivalent rates when the economic intention is to hold discount factors constant.

Is the displayed scenario change a return?

It is an immediate model-price change with no elapsed time. A holding-period return would need purchase and sale conditions, coupon receipts, reinvestment and relevant costs. The scenario should not be labeled realized performance or an annualized investment result.

What does the ladder's annual total mean?

It adds scheduled coupon and principal payments for that year. It does not reinvest prior receipts or claim that the money arrives at the beginning of the year. Detailed cash timing and liabilities need separate analysis.

Does a provider feature confirm bond-model coverage?

No. The Vector Ridge profile is promotional founder and research context. Confirm actual instrument coverage, output documentation and availability with the provider. This publication does not create a product entitlement or an institutional service agreement.

Review checkpoints

  • Match conventions before comparing numbers.
  • Payment timing and value sensitivity are different outputs.
